I’m also a former aerospace engineering student, and have been a long-time user of Flight Simulator X and X-Plane 11. I’ve flown the DA20 A1 and C1, as well as the DA42 (including 20 hours in the DSim-42 simulator). I have about 160 total hours, around 80 of which are PIC. I’m a qualified SMEL-rated PPL holder, and trainee MEI and CPL student. I hope sharing my experience and opinions will be informative to those who are looking for answers to those questions. But when I was weighing up whether to buy this game, I found scant little on the criticisms I give here - about the realism of FS2020 as simulation platform. Controversial, perhaps, given the plaudits showered upon it. As a simulator I would ascribe it phrases like, “inaccurate”, “insufficient” and “a step backwards”. And it very much is all of these things, but only in three respects: its scenery, atmospheric modelling, and rendering. You’ll probably also have heard it associated with phrases like “game changing”, “revolutionary”, and “universally acclaimed”. If you’re a pilot, sim-enthusiast, gamer, or aviation fan, you’ll probably have heard of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.
